MTK organizes
workshop on allopathic treatment
18 October: The first group of
Tibetan physicians attended a three-day workshop on allopathic,
started yesterday here at the Men-Tsee-Khang (MTK) hall.
This workshop is designed to address difficulties faced
by Tibetan doctors in their treatment procedure, especially
to focus on difficulties in interpreting allopathic medical
reports. Dr. Kunchok Dorjee, an allopathic doctor practicing
at the Delek Hospital, is the resource person.
The administration organized
official function to mark this important occasion with the
chief guest Dr Tseten Dorjee Sadutsang – lighted a
butter lamp.
The Deputy Director Dr Tsewang
Tamdin, during his opening address to the course attendees,
spoke on the importance of the workshop & stated that
this particular workshop is a result of questionnaire forms
the respective doctors from various departments and branch
clinics through out India and Nepal have filled up and sent
them back to the administration. He emphasized that foreseeing
a need of a time and to address difficulties faced by various
doctors, the administration scrutinized and differentiated
the questionnaires into 14 different categories, giving
birth to the equal number of workshops as well. Dr Tamdin
felt that it is equally important for the Tibetan physicians
to understand procedures of allopathic techniques to aid
in their treatment procedures. He also added that changes
in the curriculum of medical college are inevitable for
the students to know correctly on the treatment procedures
of allopathic medicine.
“This is probably the first
workshop of its kind”, said the Director Dr Dawa in
his short and impressive speech. He also emphasized that
His Holiness the Dalai Lama in his speech to College students
and lectures in 1969 has a mention on the importance of
research work on Tibetan medicine vis-à-vis modern
scientific methods. It also has a mention on the concept
of seeing feasibility to extract essentials from medicinal
ingredients and make Tibetan medicine look more pleasing
to patients with smaller dosages. Likewise, it is highly
important to understand diagnostic and treatment procedures
of western medicine to carry out comparative studies and
to incorporate better techniques along side the traditional
Tibetan methods that His Holiness said will prove beneficial.
The director and the deputy director
are of the view that the administration will provide every
possible means, leaving no stone unturned in its quest to
fulfill the requirements of its staff especially doctors
– to aid in their treatment procedures. Justifying
the stance, both of them proclaimed on the significance
to utilize this opportunity to the fullest.
Dr Kunchok Dorjee is to cover
the following topics: Physical examination, report, pathology,
ECG, X-ray (chest and bones conditions with GL and urinary
stone), laboratory requisition slip (urine-analysis, microscopy,
parasitology) stethoscope, hematology, bio-chemistry (fasting
